FLINTS,
NONESOPRITTY & LOOKING GLASSES -- THE INDIAN
TRADER
The account record of Thomas Hill in Dupui's general
store ledger indicates that the man was likely
engaged in trading activities with the Indians:
-- to 97 yds. of Nonesopritty
-- to 11 & ½ yds. of Garlix
-- to 4 yds. of half
thicks
-- to 15 knives & 6 Course tooth Combs
-- to 12 Gallons of Rum
-- to 20 Barrs of Lead
-- to 50 flints
This supposition is
further supported by the fact that Thomas Hill paid
off his account with deer skins, with 29 lbs. of
beaver skins, a wolf skin, 5 fisher skins, 2 red fox
skins, 2 gray fox skins, 15 muskrat skins, 3 raccoon
skins, an otter skin, and by 8 bear skins. The
fur trade was very much alive in the early days of
Dupui's store:

Relationships with Indians
are often reported in the ledger, notably in Samuel
Dupui's pages. Therein one reads of a 5
shilling purchase made on behalf of a "Squaa," a 10
shilling purchase on behalf of Paxinosa's wife
(Paxinosa was a noted Shawnee chief), a 9 shilling
purchase for "Joseph the Indian," multiple purchases
for "Houpeck the Indian" that included rum, the
purchase "to an Indian for a Cannoe," and a payment
tendered by way of "3 lbs. of Gun Powder to an
Indian".
The account pages of
Nicholas Dupui himself also show the supply of "Meal
to the Indians," and such gifts as "a felt Hatt 7s.
& a Cap 3s. for Joseph the Indian".
