The Dupui Ledger: 1776

1776 -- AMERICAN
REVOLUTIONARY WAR

Long before the exchange of gunfire at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts, the Dupui family was poised for impending war. May of 1767 would see the last credit-based transactions posted to the Dupui ledger. For the next twelve years, not a single such transaction would be recorded. This early pre-war period would see the 1768 Massachusetts Circular Letter, written by Samuel Adams, which called for unified colonial resistance in opposing Parliament's continued persistence in taxing the colonies without proper representation.

The dozen following years:

1769: Philadelphia merchants join the boycott of British trade goods.

1770: The Boston Massacre

1771: The Battle of Alamance, considered by some to be the opening salvo
of the American Revolution.

1772: The Sons of Liberty attack the Royal Navy Schooner Gaspee in
Narragansett Bay

1773: The Boston Tea Party

1774: The British Parliament passes the "Intolerable Acts"

1775: The famous "shot heard 'round the world" marked the start of the
American War of Independence

1776: Declaration of Independence issued

1777: The Battle of Saratoga results in the first major American victory

1778: France enters the American Revolution on the side of the colonists

1779: In Pennsylvania, Loyalists and Indians led by Mohawk Joseph Brant
attack settlers at the Battle of Minisink

1780: Pennsylvania becomes the first American state to abolish slavery
